Indian Markets Extend Losses Amid Trump Tariff Concerns
Indian equities deepened their decline at midday Thursday as investor sentiment soured following the TRUMP administration's new 25% tariffs on Indian exports. The benchmark Sensex fell 427.90 points (0.53%) to 80,116.09, while the Nifty 50 dropped 138.75 points (0.56%) to 24,435.45. Market breadth remained decidedly negative with 2,671 decliners versus 1,213 advancers on the BSE.
Selling pressure was broad-based, with the Nifty Midcap 100 index sliding 1.38% and banking stocks retreating 0.77%. Hero MotoCorp bucked the trend as the Nifty's top performer, gaining 2.98%, while Adani Enterprises led losers with a 3.52% plunge. The tariff announcement, effective August 27, continues to weigh heavily on market psychology.
